Manager working against mobility
This situation highlight hinders against internal mobility.
Text version scenario
We want to build an ethical, transparent culture together with our employees. However, manager behavior and attitudes might compromise our aspirations to be better.
This example highlights the dilemma.
An employee is eager to broaden her experience and has applied for an open position at a high profile project in another region. After the first interview, both the hiring manager and the employee are positive to continue the process.
In line with the Internal Recruitment Policy, the employee informs her manager about her ambitions.
The manager wishes her good luck and will of course participate as a reference.
At the same time, the manager underscores that her career possibilities in the current region might be limited if she continues her pursuit of the other position. Commitment to the customers, and getting a solid experience and knowledge of the current region is of great importance to be able to take on larger roles. Now, it seems like the employee is more attracted by a project elsewhere.
In addition, her specialized skills are critical to the current project. Her team will struggle to complete the project on time and on budget if she should leave.
