Interview Calls from the Car

This situation raises questions about balancing unrealistic expectations with safety issues.

Text version scenario

In a bidding that we won we commitment to put together a team very quickly. It put the project manager under extreme pressure to hire. She interviewed candidates constantly while she was driving between meetings that she had to attend.

Even if these conversations were hands-free, concentrating on an interviewee could pose safety issues and may lessen the quality of the interview.

Should employees take on such risks or speak up about unrealistic expectations that we place upon ourselves?

Discussion question

  • Have you experienced situations within Skanska that cause unrealistic pressure and safety concerns?
  • How did you approach it?
  • What did you learn from it?

Things to consider

We can learn from these situations to help us truly live our values. We can consider the following actions:

  • Create relationships of mutual respect with all departments and stakeholders that enable us to set realistic time lines.
  • Ask ourselves whether we are too eager to say “yes” without thinking through the implications or communicating with all stakeholders.
  • Encourage employees to speak up when they feel undue pressure and discuss alternatives.
