A project leader on a tunnel construction project was faced with a dilemma. As work began on the construction process, the team realized that nearby marine inhabitants could be greatly impacted. Several local environmental groups were upset. Some members of the team insisted they should look in to putting in artificial reefs and take the time to actively reach out to the environmental groups. Others argued that the team needs to spend minimal effort on this and move on. They believed that cost and deadlines would be severely impacted if they focus more on these environmental issues.

Things to consider

We can learn from these situations to help us truly live our values. While there are no clear-cut solutions, we can consider the following actions:

• Discuss our values pro-actively with all employees and also customers to ensure Skanska’s commitment to green is appreciated by all.
• Discuss and create relationships of mutual respect with all customers so that you feel empowered to speak to them when the environment is impacted.
• Display courage in speaking up about issues that impact the environment and listen with an open mind on suggestions that might come up.
• Discuss ways in which you can use a difficult situation to enhance relationships with customers, employees and community groups such that Skanska’s reputation grows.
