Fast Forward

This situation raises questions about deadlines with the customer that affect the safety and health of employees.

Text version scenario

On time and on budget are central in our promise to customers. Sometimes we really push the time schedule for projects, particularly when it comes to deadlines. We recently had a potential tenant who wanted to move in by a specific date, so our sales people and project leaders insisted that our team work faster.

At the same time, we expect everyone to “work safely or not at all”, have a great work environment, and be healthy.

How do we find a balance between the needs of our customers and our employees? How do we care for life - and customers?

Discussion question

  • Have you experienced unrealistic time schedules that affected the safety and health of employees?
  • How did you approach it?
  • What did you learn from it?

Things to consider

We can learn from these situations to help us truly live our values. We can consider the following actions:

  • Create relationships of mutual respect with our customers that enable us to ask for appropriate time lines.
  • Ask ourselves whether we are too eager to say “yes” to the customer without thinking through implications and communicating with all stakeholders.
  • Make sure employees and customers are aware of ALL safety standards.
